This is one of my favorite foundations to use. It creates an elastic foundation like the chainless foundation single crochet, but it is a bit thinner and depending on stitches used can be very decorative as well.
This foundation is just very short rows of crochet stitches worked to a specified length, then the main part of the crochet project is worked off the sides of the rows.
