Well it might not look like it at my house, but Spring has sprung. Soon the warmer weather will find us, even up here on the mountain, and when it does I’ll be looking for cool projects to work on. It is March 14th again and that means it is Pi Day! For those of you that might have forgotten your circular geometry, Pi is the number used to calculate the circumference of a circle. It’s really much more than that, but that covers the most pertinent aspect for those of us yarnie arts folks. It has decimal places going on to infinity, but is generally written 3.14, which is similar to the order we Americans write the date March 14th: 3/14.

As a designer my geeky math nature provides me with helpful tools in figuring out shaping and fit for garments as well as for calculating yardage for an afghan. Most of the time in my patterns I have worked all the math for you. But a few years back I had a request from some of my fans for the formulas for making perfect fitting hats. Considering the number of different sized heads out there and the variety of yarn weights this seemed like a very good idea.
But how to make a pattern, that could cover all that? Initially I created a class to teach the formula and then I came up with my “teaching” pattern the “Perfect Fit Hat” available in my Ravelry Shop. In this pattern I demonstrate the measurements you need from the head you are trying to fit and illustrate how to make them. As well as a primer on using Pi to get the size hat you want, the pattern includes step by step photo tutorials, stitch charts and a sizing cheat sheet for those that don’t want to mess with the formulas.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day and I have one more thing to share with you. The folks at “I Like Crochet” online magazine are offering a special Valentine’s sale of their subscriptions.
Today is Thanksgiving day here in the US. For my family it is a day to get together with family and friends for a big meal and be thankful for what we have.
In keeping with this year’s tradition of school holidays, the kids are both sick with pink-eye and colds. It’s looking like himself and I are fighting off the cold part as well. I’m at least grateful for not having to juggle the kids missing school days along with everything else.
Another thing I am thankful for is the training I have had in medical science. I treated the kids with Lavender essential oil and raw honey until himself could take the them to the doctor. Both kids have reported that their eyes are no longer itching. The doctor only gave my youngest eye drops because he was the only one with swelling and discharge.
Fortunately today I’m feeling a lot better and my youngest seems to be turning the corner. My younger brother and his girlfriend came up for dinner, but stayed in a hotel in town to avoid too much time with the germs. I’ve been looking forward to seeing the 2 of them for the past month.
Tomorrow we will be decorating our new Christmas Tree. This year I decided it was time for a skinnier tree. We have always had an artificial tree because of himself’s allergies. We have a very full house between the kids’ stuff and my yarn, so I’ve been campaigning for a smaller tree. I was especially attracted to the “pencil” trees that I had seen, and to the “pre-lit” trees.
My least favorite part of decorating the tree is fighting with putting on the lights. I’m so excited to finally have a “pre-lit” tree! We will also be decorating a big swath of greenery over our largest living room window too. That way we can put out some of the ornaments the animals like to attack.
For many folks Thanksgiving marks the beginning of Christmas shopping with Black Friday sales at all the big retailers. I hope some of you will be looking at shopping also on Small Business Saturday to support small businesses that make up the back bone of the US economy.

I’ve had a really fun week. I hope all of you got a chance to visit my blog this past Tuesday for the Flash Giveaway Blog Hop. That was quite the whirlwind and a total blast. I think I, and my 7 other designer friends were all blown away by the response.
Now we are going into Labor Day Weekend. This weekend always marks the end of summer for me, even though the calendar says Autumn officially starts September 23rd.
Labor Day originally was created to celebrate the contributions of American workers. For my celebration I’m having a Labor Day Weekend Sale on 6 of my patterns, because you all work hard and who doesn’t like to save a little money? I selected patterns that use 1-2 balls of yarn and are great for gift giving (since we all know that deadline is sneaking up on us, only 112 days left).
One of my favorite “small start” projects. Each of these motifs are worked off each other and you can vary the length of your scarf according to the amount of yarn you have. Can even make it shorter as a “Neck Cozy” just add a pretty button and use any of the openings in the lace as a “buttonhole”. This pattern is a great one for using chunky yarns with gradual color changes.
Another one of my moebius twist crochet projects. I love to design like this because these projects need so little fussing with to finish. Worked in a chunky yarn this is another quick project to crochet up in an evening for your gift giving needs.
I loved working with this luxurious chunky alpaca yarn, the resulting cowl is squishy and so snuggly. A great project to make for someone special on your gift list who can really use a warm hug.
This is a crochet project for the more intrepid crocheter. The stitch pattern is changeable so you won’t get bored and the lacy fabric looks so elegant when finished you may want to keep it for yourself. The pattern has detailed text instructions and a full stitch diagram so you won’t get lost.
Ah Paris. This pattern is fun for experienced crocheters and a great “next-step” for newer crocheters. The stitch pattern alters every 2 rows, but is repetitive enough that it is easy to memorize. Another fun project that can be made in the original full length for a scarf, or shortened with buttons added to become a neck cozy.
One of my favorite moebius cowls that I’ve designed so far. This one is a little unusual in when you need to turn for your rounds, so you won’t get bored. But the rounds go so quickly that you’ll have a finished cowl before you know it. This cowl works great in color changing yarns, but would be gorgeous in a solid color as well.
